Inspired by the IRB Seven World Series, the FIRA-AER introduced in 2011 the Grand Prix Series (GPS) with 2-day tournaments. The first nine European Seven series had 1-day tournaments with 12 teams each, playing a final championship with the best 16 european teams. In 2011 the European Sevens did not have a championship, just an accumulation of points from the GPS tournaments. In 2011 there were 4 tournaments, whereas in 2012, there were three. In 2011, (Serbia) won the B division and was promoted to Division A. Germany won in 2011 the Division A, so it got the promotion to the GPS. Switzerland, in Division A in 2011 was relegated to Division B in 2012.
The 2015 Series also determined the teams for the Olympics repechage.
